About this plant Floating duckweed consists of tiny light-green circular leaves, or fronds, floating on top of the water. A single root, called a rootlet, hangs down underneath each frond. The roots often grab onto one another, forming a dense mat. In the summer, tiny, barely noticeable, oval-shaped blooms appear in pouches. Each bloom produces a fruit, and from each fruit comes one to three seeds.
