The nuts produced by American hazelnut are a mast of squirrels, deer, turkey, woodpeckers, pheasants and other animals. The male catkins are a food staple of ruffed grouse throughout the winter. The American Hazelnut can be used as a shrub-like landscape plant or as a hedge. Likes well-drained, loamy soil, full sun or light shade. Grows to 18', 15' spread. (Plant two trees for pollination)
